Mountainside 2nd Grade Activities

The 2nd graders at Beechwood School have sufficient events to occupy their young academic lives. They are in the beginning stages of mathematical educations and are exploring their naturally scientific minds, by observing the world around them.

(above) Students use blocks to understand place value and to model, write, and compare 3-digit numbers in Mrs. Bakker’s 2nd grade class. Manipulatives, models, pictures, and symbols are used to build mathematical understanding as part of the Go Math! program. The program helps students engage with the Common Core State Standards.

(above) Miss Murphy’s 2nd grade students spent time in Beechwood School’s garden observing a monarch butterfly’s behaviors and actions (and taking notes) once it was released as part of their Journey North Project. The 2nd graders learned about the life cycle of the butterfly and observed 3 of their own chrysalis in the classroom. They learned about the migration routes monarch butterflies take during the fall months to reach Mexico and other warmer habitats.
