Morris Amateur Growers: Rutgers Annual Tomato Festival is Online August 26

Join Webinars with Tomato Experts and Tour Rutgers Farm

Morris County’s backyard and community gardeners can join experts and fellow tomato lovers for the upcoming Great Tomato Tasting at Home event to learn more about growing, preparing and preserving tomatoes.

Rutgers University’s Agricultural Experiment Station will host the annual event online this year on Wednesday, August 26 from noon to 8 p.m. The activities feature the ongoing research projects at the Rutgers Snyder Research and Extension Farm as well as the historic connection between the Garden State’s favorite crop — tomatoes — and Rutgers NJAES.

Rutgers’ newest:  ‘Scarlet Sunrise‘

Educational webinars include a Q&A with Rutgers experts, including Morris County’s Agricultural Agent Peter Nitzsche, who is also Director of Rutgers Snyder Research and Extension Farm where the event is held.  Nitzsche and Tom Orton, an extension specialist in vegetables, developed the ‘Scarlet Sunrise,’ a uniquely flavorful bicolor grape tomato that was released in 2020, after eight years of research.
