Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains collected more than 180 winter coats, which were donated to men, women and children in need through Goodwill of Springfield, New Jersey. Volunteers from the synagogue’s Social Action Committee conducted a month-long coat drive collection, which culminated on Sunday, November 6. Seventh-grade students in Congregation Beth Israel’s Religious School helped sort and bag the coats when the drive ended. The students also wrote warm greetings and drew uplifting pictures to be left as “a note in the coat” in the pockets of outerwear going to children. Congregation Beth Israel’s Social Action Committee sponsors a wide range of outreach projects throughout the year to help people in need in Scotch Plains and surrounding communities.
