May 2018 Programs at the Mountainside Public Library

The Mountainside Public Library has scheduled the following programs for May. The library will be closed on May 28 in observance of Memorial Day.

Tuesday Night Movies. On May 8, “I, Tonya” (2018, R)
will be presented. Based on the unbelievable, but true events, I, Tonya is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. “Phantom Thread” (2017, R) is our feature film on May 15. Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and his sister Cyril are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. “Wonder” (2017, PG) will be screened on May 22. Born with facial differences that, up until then, had prevented him from going to a mainstream school, August Pullman became the most unlikely of heroes when he entered the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie’s extraordinary journey unites them all and proves you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out. Based on the New York Times bestseller, Wonder. And on May 29, our last offering of the month will be “Darkest Hour” (2017, PG-13). During the early days of World War II, with the fall of France imminent, Britain faces its darkest hour as the threat of invasion looms. As the seemingly unstoppable Nazi forces advance, and with the Allied army cornered on the beaches of Dunkirk, the fate of Western Europe hangs on the leadership of the newly-appointed British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill.  Showtime is 6:30 p.m. for each movie.

Brown Bag Academy. Our popular Great Courses series continues on May 7, 14, and 21 at 1:15 p.m.
with “How to Listen to and Understand Great Music” narrated by Professor Robert Greenberg, Music Historian-in-Residence at the San Francisco Performances. Learning how to appreciate the unmatched beauty, genius, and power of concert music can permanently enrich your life. Bring your lunch. Coffee, tea, and cookies will be served.

“Aging Service Kiosk” May 11 at 12:30 p.m.
Donna Farrell of The Union County Department of Human Services Division on Aging & Disability Resource Connection will be at the library again to provide information about home delivered meals, respite care, home care, adult day care, support services for caregivers and more.

The Chorus, Ballet, and Orchestra of the San Francisco Opera is conducted by Maurizio Arena.

Career Networking Group, May 14 at 6:30 p.m.
“Coping with the Strain of Your search on Your Family” A career search can be a stressful time. A primary source of income has dried up, you don’t know when you will land, and you experience the rollercoaster of emotional ups and downs as opportunities arise, and then fall through. Your spouse, partner and family are going through all of that with you, yet they feel they have no control over the process. You can go to more group networking events, schedule more networking meetings, take more courses, send out more resumes, etc., but what can they do? Join us, and bring your spouse or partner, too, as Career Search Counselor John Hadley shows us strategies to safeguard those relationships, and actually put them to work to move your search forward.  John Hadley is the principal at John Hadley Associates (JHACareers.com). He teaches job seekers strategies and skills that enable them to tap into the “hidden” job market and find the best jobs now. He also works with professionals struggling to become influential leaders. His Career Tips newsletter brings expert advice on marketing yourself to over 9500 subscribers; find out more at JHACareers.com.

Come Read to Kalee. May 18 at 3:30 p.m.
