Barbie: The History of America’s Most Famous Doll
Tuesday, July 9th @7pm
No other doll has been played with, analyzed, collected, criticized and loved. In this illustrated lecture, historian Leslie Goddard delves into the history of Barbie and her inventor, the passionately creative and intensely competitive Ruth Handler. Learn what inspired Handler to develop Barbie in 1959, how Barbie helped make Mattel one of the world’s most successful toy companies, and what Barbie’s impact has been on American culture
Leslie Goddard is a historian and author who holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and master’s degrees in museum studies and in theater. She has written three books on Chicago history and has been presenting programs on topics in history for more than fifteen years.
New York Botanical Gardens’ Amazing Exhibits
Wednesday, July 17th @ 7pm
Every year the NY Botanical Garden hosts a holiday train show containing replicas of iconic buildings and bridges throughout the five boroughs all made out of bark, leaves, and other natural materials. Model trains travel around the replicas. Every year the garden also hosts a themed orchid show with orchids from all over the world. In addition to these annual exhibits there are many limited engagement exhibits that enhance the already magnificent garden. Explore these annual exhibits as well as some amazing past exhibits. Event is hosted by Kemmerer Library

How Musicals Get To Broadway

John Kenrick will be giving us an insiders look at the way musicals get from the page to the stage.
John speaks on literally hundreds of topics related to musical theatre and classic films. His schedule has run the gamut from universities and adult education programs to luxury liners and the NYC Fringe Festival.
