Madison PD Joins “Blue Envelope Program”

The Madison Police Department is proud to be joining the ‘Blue Envelope Program’, which was created to help those with autism spectrum disorder, as well as Police Officers in the event of a motor vehicle stop.
Created in Connecticut, this program’s primary goals are to aid autism spectrum disorder drivers with document organization – the Blue Envelope – and to educate them about what to do and expect during a motor vehicle stop, so that the motorist as well as the Police Officer have a beneficial encounter.
The Blue Envelope will hold a color photocopy of the individual’s driver’s license, vehicle registration card and insurance card, as well as an emergency contact form and emergency contact phone numbers. Blue Envelopes are available to be picked up at Madison Police Department, located within the Public Safety Complex at 62 Kings Road, Madison, NJ and should be placed in every vehicle that is operated by a person with autism spectrum disorder.
“April is Autism Awareness Month, so what better time than now for Madison Police Department to join the ‘Blue Envelope Program’. Our Officers receive constant training on how to effectively conduct traffic stops for those with autism spectrum disorder, and this program is just another step forward to allow a beneficial, effective, and pleasant encounter between the officer and the motorist,” said Chief of Police John Miscia.
