La Guardia Airport, Public Arts Commission

NYC’s La Guardia Airport has seen a $8 billion transformation during the past years and its Terminal B, which opened in 2020, includes outstanding public art commissions by leading contemporary artists Sabine Hornig, Sarah Sze, Laura Owens and Jeppe Hein. Whether in glass, tile, hanging or functional sculpture, all projects connect with the building as well as the city and their identity in most interesting ways. We will take a look at the history of La Guardia airport, including Steinway and Ehret’s North Beach amusement park and Glenn Curtiss Field of 1929, as well as the Art Deco Style Marine Air Terminal with it’s WPA mural by James Brooks, and we will explore the new Public Art commissions in detail.
