Girl Scout Community Service Night 2019
Submitted by Allison Kempe
Most Friday nights are spent going out and having fun with friends or just taking it easy after a long week. But not for many of Long Hill’s Girl Scouts and their family members who took the time on a recent Friday to help the homeless who live under bridges in NY and NJ.
Organized and facilitated by the Girl Scout Senior Troops and the St Vincent de Paul Youth Ministry, toiletry kits (including shampoo, soap, lotion, toothbrushes and toothpaste) were sorted and packaged by the participants for the most vulnerable of the homeless. Individually wrapped snacks were also donated.
“It’s so nice to see the kids come together to serve the community,” said Lynn Vreeland, event organizer. “We made approximately 750 toiletry packs and about 150 sock bags. A lot of people in need will be positively affected and given a gift of hope. That is priceless!”
Bridges Outreach, Inc. organizes more than 2,000 volunteers each year who deliver 65,000 brown bag meals, 10,000 pairs of socks and underwear, 7,500 toiletry kits, 49,000 cups of soup, and literally tons of donated clothing to over 21,000 people in New York City, Newark and Irvington, NJ.
