Grant to Expand ESL program in Summit

Literacy New Jersey, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting literacy and improving educational opportunities for adults, is thrilled to announce that their English as a Second Language (ESL) program in Summit, NJ has been proudly supported by a grant from The Summit Foundation.

For over 40 years, Literacy New Jersey has provided free instruction to adults in need of reading, writing, math, and English language assistance. Volunteer tutors work closely with individuals one-to-one or in small groups to help them improve their literacy skills, including those seeking to learn English as a Second Language (ESL), enhance basic reading and writing abilities, obtain their high school equivalency (HSE) credential, or become U.S. citizens.

The Summit Foundation, known for its commitment to addressing critical social issues, has generously awarded Literacy New Jersey a grant to support its ESL program in Summit. This funding reflects the importance of Literacy New Jersey’s work in the community and its dedication to promoting literacy and educational equality.

Through the grant provided by The Summit Foundation, Literacy New Jersey aims to serve 70 students in the Summit area during the upcoming fiscal year. In the previous year, the program surpassed its target, providing 3,047 instructional hours to 80 Summit area students.

Literacy New Jersey’s ESL classes meet at Summit High School, which provides students with a comfortable, well-equipped, safe place for English classes. It also allows Literacy New Jersey to work with the school district to reach parents who are struggling with English.

The need for adult literacy services in Summit is significant but often overlooked. Census data reveals that over 29% of Summit residents speak a language other than English at home, with 32% reporting limited English proficiency. Moreover, over 80,000 adults in Union County, or 14% of the population, lack a high school diploma. Literacy New Jersey recognizes the impact of limited literacy skills on individuals, including restricted earning potential and limited access to better employment opportunities.

The ESL program by Literacy New Jersey specifically addresses the needs of Summit’s immigrant population—hardworking individuals who often work multiple jobs without benefits and for low wages. Without proficient English skills, they face barriers to better jobs, supporting their children’s education, and navigating everyday tasks. Literacy New Jersey’s program aims to bridge these gaps and empower individuals to succeed in their personal and professional lives.

Literacy New Jersey is grateful for the support and generosity of The Summit Foundation and looks forward to specifically addressing Summit’s need for adult literacy services.
