Holocaust Remembrance Lecture
The Linden Public Library is proud to offer a Holocaust Remembrance Lecture which will be presented by Dr. Joanna Sliwa. The event will be held on Monday, April 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the Columbia Bank Room. The library is located at 31 East Henry Street in Linden.
A Linden resident, Dr. Sliwa will discuss the topic of “The Holocaust Through the Eyes of Jewish Children.” In her 2021 award-winning book, Jewish Childhood in Krakow: A Microhistory of the Holocaust, Sliwa describes the actual events and daily lives of two Jewish children in a Polish ghetto. First, there is a young girl named Janka Warszawska who smuggled food into the Krakow Ghetto and later smuggled Jewish children out of the ghetto, saving them from death. Second, she tells the story of Jerzy Hoffman, a Jewish boy, who lived under a false identity on the streets on Kraków. He eventually approached a Catholic institution to help him.
Sliwa is an historian at the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) in New York City where she also administers academic programs. Joanna has taught at Rutgers University and Kean University. Previously, she worked at the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). Additionally, she consults for projects ranging from teacher training programs to academic texts, websites, films, television programs, and exhibits.
