On October 7th the Linden Fire Department held its annual Fire Prevention Night in front of Linden City Hall. The department had its many resources out on display for the public to observe including the Decon truck, the water rescue equipment, trench rescue, high angle rescue truck and extrication demonstration (Jaws of Life). There were many fire safety and fire department activities for the children to participate and learn from.
The Linden Firefighters FMBA Locals 34 and 234 were present to serve hot dogs and help explain the equipment. With donations from NuStar Energy and Walmart we were able to raffle off bicycles and helmets to 4 lucky kids.
An hour into the night the department received a call for a structure fire. The engine and ladder crews were able to pack up there apparatus quickly and rush to the fire scene. Though shorthanded the night was still able to proceed and provide a fun and informative night for all.
Fire Prevention Deputy Chief Lawrence Kolesa said “Fire Prevention night is an important instrument in implementing a fire education program to the young public. It not only teaches the public about the fire department and there capabilities, but also the importance of practicing fire safety to keep them safe.” The night was a huge success with close to 400 visitors through the night, the department was able to spread the word about fire safety.
