In honor of Arbor Day a Tamaques Elementary school family donated 150 tree seedlings, purchased from the NJ Forestry Commission, for first graders to plant, nurture and observe for the next four years until they graduate. Led by Principal Duelks, the Tamaques first grade teachers and third grade teacher Frank Fuzy, along with all first grade classes, gathered on a sun-filled day to plant the 3-inch high Eastern White Pine seedlings, lining the width of the school’s field. The experience acted as a launching point for many lessons, including those focused on the environment, math, science, literature and even self-esteem. As first grade teacher Mary Montes noted, “In the spirit of these seedlings, our students are learning lessons about remembering their roots and standing tall and proud.”
