In honor of Memorial Day, Mary Ellen Duggan, assistant to the business administrator at Kenilworth Schools, decided to have a fundraiser to support the hospitalized veterans at Lyons Hospital in Basking Ridge and the local Kenilworth VFW who runs programs for them. She called the fundraiser, “Jeans for Troops”. She sent emails to all staff members in the school district, which includes Harding Elementary School and David Brearley Middle/High School. In order to wear jeans and patriotic wear to school on the Friday before Memorial Day, they would donate to the fund.
There was an overwhelming response to her email and Ms. Duggan presented Commander Jeans of VFW Post 2230 in Kenilworth with a check to help with expenses when they travel to Lyons once a month to spend time with the veterans and bring them sneakers and food. The VFW also hosts dinners throughout the year for veterans where they are bused to Kenilworth VFW and the VFW members cook dinner for them and provide entertainment.
Commander Jeans stated that these funds are very much appreciated and will be used to support the hospitalized veterans. On behalf of the VFW and all the members, he wishes to thank Ms. Duggan and the Kenilworth School District for their support.
