We are thrilled to bring back our “Sunday Sounds” musical performances which will take place on the first Sunday of each month. On January 6, at 1 p.m., we will celebrate Elvis’ birthday when the Einstein Alley Musicians Collaborative will play hits from the Million Dollar Quartet (Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash) in a program that is suitable for adults and families with older children. Enjoy some birthday cake in the King’s honor. No registration required.
Book Clubs offered in January include Bagels & Books on Monday, January 7 at 10 a.m., where book-lovers share their recent reading experiences, and pick up suggestions for future reading. Registration is required. This program is open to any adult who enjoys reading. The library’s longstanding evening and afternoon book clubs will meet on January 14 and 15th respectively. Check the library web site for titles slated for discussion. Next Chapter Book Club for teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities resumes on Tuesday, January 8. Adult art workshops continue with the January meeting of the Jewelry Club to be held on Monday, January 14 at 10 a.m. Leah Zara-Acevedo returns with a Let’s Monet! painting project. Both workshops fill up quickly. Priority is given to Scotch Plains and Fanwood residents.
For football fans, the time between the NFL Conference Championships and the Super Bowl can be uneventful. Come to the library for your football fix! Prize-winning chef Jennifer Bridgeman returns to the library on Saturday, January 26 with health conscious recipes to wow your Super Bowl party crowd. Step-by-step demos, samplings and advice included. Sports writer, blogger, and documentary film producer Jerry Barca will be at the library on Sunday, January 27 to discuss our local teams and the kinds of leadership shown over the decades that built, re-built and led winning teams. Jerry is a huge Notre Dame fan, so don’t be surprised to hear something about the Fighting Irish, as well. Both programs will begin at 2 pm, registration is required and is open to all adults and high school students.
Friday noon films will feature Julia Roberts. No registration required.
We offer daily after school programs for middle schoolers on days when school is in session, as well as monthly evening cooking classes and college prep programs. There will be a Mario Kart tournament in January. Programs are for students in grades 5-12 unless otherwise noted. Some events require advanced registration. Please see the online calendar for specific dates and times.
In addition to our regularly scheduled weekly story times, there are some exciting new programs for children of all ages this January. Students in Kindergarten to 2nd grade are invited to join our new Early Reader Book Club. The Union County 4H STEM Club and the Montclair Learning Center will be hosting STEM-themed workshops for older elementary and middle school students. A new monthly cooking program for children 8 and older is also beginning this month. All programs require registration, please check the website for exact dates and registration information.
