Fran Day and Joyce Chiapetta, from the Kenilworth Historical Society, visited the students in Mrs. Karen DeMaio’s second grade class at St.Theresa School in Kenilworth.
Mrs. Day discussed Harriet Tubman and The Underground Railroad. She showed the students a hollowed gourd used as a ladle for drinking and explained the the term “drinking gourd” was used as a code for the Big Dipper to help the escaping slaves follow the North Star. The students learned the meaning behind the words to the song “Follow the Drinking Gourd.”
