Hehnly School’s Breakfast Bunch met recently to hear Hehnly parent, Mrs. Cardoso, a pharmacist, discuss various aspects in the pharmaceutical industry. The discussion was mainly focused on pediatric pharmacy and included several interactive components, one of which where students were able to replicate “drawing up medicine doses.” In addition, the Breakfast Bunch participants also created capsules using powdered sugar, to gain an understanding of how a pharmacist creates prescription medicine.
Mrs. Cardoso also discussed the importance of paying attention to the directions on usage for both prescription and over the counter medicines. The learning continued when students compared and contrasted many types of medicines and candies, noticing how similar many medicines look to the sugary treats. Each member of the Breakfast Bunch received a poster to display in their homes with the Poison Control number on it.
“We were so happy Mrs. Cardoso came in to discuss with our students this important topic,” explained Cindy Tarello, Teacher for Literacy Enrichment and Gifted and Talented. “Mrs. Cardoso is a pharmacist with Pharma-Care and we are so fortunate that she is part of the Hehnly Community.”
The Breakfast Bunch meets monthly prior to the beginning of school. Each meeting is focused on a topic that engages students in learning and helps to expand their knowledge base.
