Green Brook Middle School Ethics Bowl Teams made their mark at the 6th Annual NJ-NY Middle School Ethics Bowl, achieving a resounding victory in only their second year of participation! Facing off against nine other talented schools, both GBMS teams demonstrated their ethical reasoning and critical thinking skills throughout the competition. Green Brook Middle School was the only public school participating in the bowl.
GBMS Team One laid a strong foundation for success with Captain Aarna Kuashaak, Justin Yin, Priya Lele, Shutong Zhai, and Kavin Karthik. GBMS Team Two followed suit, showcasing their dedication and expertise with Captain Charlie Ford, Sonia Nikhil, Raima Jain, and Annika Jivrajani.
The team was coached by Ethics Teacher Brian Harrington and Co-Coached by 5th Grade Teacher Jessica Sura.
The journey began in late November, with the teams diligently examining the competition’s six ethical cases. The students honed their critical analysis and communication skills by breaking down each case and discussing its values, stakeholders, and optimal solutions for the match question. The dedicated teams met twice a week after school for months, followed by weekly practice matches in the final stretch leading up to the competition.
Both teams dominated on Saturday, February 24th, winning all three matches and overcoming challenges against the private schools. GBMS Team Two ultimately reached the final round against the hosting Kent Place Institute. Their hard work and unwavering dedication paid off as they clinched the first-place trophy, a testament to their passion for ethical debate.
This incredible achievement reflects the unwavering commitment of both teams. The countless hours spent researching, crafting arguments, and refining their skills culminated in this rewarding victory. We are incredibly proud of the GBMS Ethics Bowl Teams and their outstanding accomplishment. They have set a high bar for future teams and are certain to continue achieving great things in the years to come!
