Friends of the Westfield Memorial Library Book Sale
Submitted by Marcy Lechner
The 9th Annual Children’s and Teens’ book sale hosted by the Friends of the Westfield Memorial Library was a big success this year. The sale generated almost $3,300, all of which will go toward funding programs at the Library. The wonderful selection of books and media offered due to the community’s generous donations created a great place for readers to shop.
The first day of the sale got off to a great start with a story time led by a librarian for our youngest readers. Throughout the sale, volunteers read to children in our Story Corner, providing parents and guardians time to shop at their leisure. New this year was a Color Your Own Bookmark activity, which proved to be a big hit.
A heartfelt thank you to the volunteers who truly made the book sale happen. Their efforts were appreciated by the sale organizers and by the parents and children who used the volunteers to help them find exactly what they were looking for, from a favorite board book to a Caldecott or Newberry award-winning classic. We look forward to their dedication and energy during the spring sale in April 2020. This year we were joined by student volunteers from the Students Helping Out Union County (S.H.O.U.T-U.C) program for their enthusiastic and invaluable help packing our remaining books at the end of the sale. Their assistance helped enable us to donate our books to other groups supporting literacy among young readers. A special thank you also goes out to the Board of Education, the Department of Public Works and the Westfield Public Library for their logistical support. For our volunteer thank you breakfast, Ahrre’s Coffee generously donated coffee and mugs for volunteers who attended our thank you breakfast. With all of this participation, the book sale truly is a collaborative Westfield effort.
