FREE CONCERT HOSTED BY THE MUSICAL CLUB OF WESTFIELD

To celebrate the beginning of their second one hundred years as a performing arts organization, the Musical Club of Westfield invites the public to the first free concert of the clubs 101st season. The concert is planned for Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Westfield, 170 Elm Street, Westfield NJ. The program will begin with a performance of a Sonatine composed by Henri Dutilleux by Susan Graham, flute and Carolle-Ann Mochernuk, piano.
Soprano Ellen Goff Entriken will continue the concert with a varied collection of songs of faith. Ms. Entriken’s selections will include “How Can I Keep from Singing?” by Robert Lowry, arranged by Sally DeFord and James Loynes, “Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling” by Will L. Thompson, arranged by William Cutter,” Witness” a spiritual with words and arrangement by Hall Johnson. Finishing this section of the concert will be “Adonai Ro’i Lo Echsar” (Psalm 23) composed by Gerald Cohen and “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hand” arranged by Margaret Bonds. Mary Beth McFall, pianist, will accompany Ms. Entriken throughout the performance.
The concert will close with the first movement of Horn Concerto No. 4 in E-flat Major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Dr. Theodore K. Schlosberg, playing the French horn and Beverly Shea, piano. The duo will continue with Choral für Reinach by Robert Körnli with Dr. Schlosberg playing the alphorn and Mrs. Shea accompanying on the organ. Next on the program will be Johannes Brahm’s Hungarian Dance No. 5 in Bflat. For this piece Dr. Schlosberg will play the euphonium and Mrs. Shea the piano. The concert will close with Dr. Schlosberg on tube and Mrs. Shea accompanying on the piano for “Over the Rainbow” by composer Harold Arlen.
There will be a reception with light refreshments immediately after the concert where audience members will have the opportunity to meet the performers. The Musical Club of Westfield is a 501©3 organization whose mission is to foster and encourage good music, provide performance opportunities and support young musicians with college scholarships.
