Terry Andrews, President of The Fortnightly Club of Summit, announced the recipients of The Fortnightly Club Award for 2016 are Emani Miles, Karen Arias, and Stephanie Chavis.
Emani Miles was awarded The Sherry Rawson Scholarship recipient in memory of Sherry Rawson a beloved Fortnightly Club member who served on the scholarship board for many years. Emani is the daughter of Shanayah, has a sister (Eboni a 2014 scholarship recipient), brother, and loving grandmother, Lori Miles. She is an Award winner of the Rising Scholarship, 12th grade liaison for student council, the President of the Poetry Club, President of the Black Student Union, and varsity captain of the women’s Volleyball team. She plans on attending Seton Hall University where she will be majoring in Political Science. She would like to then attend law school and aspires to become a judge.
Karen Arias is the daughter of Sandra Carvajal. Karen has been in involved in Kids Helping Kids, a Peer Leader Tutor, Cheerleading (captain) and Winter & Spring Track and Field as pole vaulter (Captain of Winter Track team). She will be attending Franklin and Marshall in Lancaster, PA where she will be majoring in Psychology in the fall.
Stephanie Chavis is the daughter of Leidy and Misael Chaves. Stephanie achieved Magna Cum Laude all four years of high school. She served on student government and was elected class secretary for senior year. She was involved in Union Hispana, Peer Leader Tutor, and Wrestling and Lacrosse Statistician. Stephanie will attend University of Delaware where she will major in both Business and Spanish in the fall.
Emain Miles, Karen Arias, and Stephanie Chavis were chosen from 36 applications by the club’s scholarship committee, consisting of Eileen Rath, Laura Sullivan and Emma Hale. The Fortnightly Club hosts an annual luncheon to fund the scholarship, which was held on June 2nd, 2016 at Canoe Brook Country Club. This year there was a fashion show showcasing Bloomingdale’s designer Gerard Darel’s musthave Summer 2016 styles.
The Fortnightly Club of Summit is a women’s group dedicated to volunteerism, fundraising, community service and outreach. Monthly meetings are open to the general public and are held at Twin Maples, 214 Springfield Avenue, Summit, New Jersey.
