Alvaro Llanos and Shawn Simons showcased their documentary titled “After the Fire, A True Story of Heroes & Cowards” to the senior class at Linden High School. Simmons and Llanos were two of the most critically burned students from the Seton Hall University fire on January 19, 2000. The two men, along with the Linden Fire Department, wanted seniors to watch this life changing story and learn about the importance of fire safety, and also become inspired by the strength of the survivors and their will to live.
The documentary covers an overview of the tragic event and its media coverage, as well as family reactions and the trial that aimed to put the arsonists behind bars. The message of the documentary is about more than just fire safety; it concerns the power of the human spirit and the importance of community. This documentary exhibits the strength of the families, the comradery between them, and reveres nurses, doctors, and firefighters for their dedication.
