Veterans Day ceremony
Borough of Fanwood
Borough of Fanwood held its annual Veterans Day ceremony under a bright, blue sky at the North Avenue train station on Saturday, November 11, 2023.
Two local veterans’ groups, American Legion Post 209 and Veterans of Foreign Wars post 10122 sponsored the event. Army veteran Joe McCourt was the host and spoke of the enduring impact our veterans, alive and deceased, have had on the American way of life. Speakers also included Dennis Mayer of American Legion Post 209 and Mayor Colleen Mahr.
Wreaths were laid in memory of those veterans who are deceased followed by a gun salute. A small audience of residents gathered for the ceremony along with members of the Fanwood Fire Department and Fanwood Police Department. Council members Gina Berry, Kathy Mitchell and Trisha Walsh also attended.
Long time Fanwood resident and World War II Army veteran Joe Schott also attended with his daughter Mary. Joe will be 102 this coming February.
