Recently, several students from East End Elementary School were surprised, and maybe a little apprehensive, when they received a call from the school principal to come to the office. The students were greeted with big smiles from Principal John Ferguson and Student Liaison Lynnelle Thomas, who quickly put their minds at ease, and congratulated each student for being selected as a recipient of an “Awesome Act” award for the month of December.
The “Awesome Act” award is the product of the school’s community to encouraging and modeling the district’s core values by following these character traits: Caring, Appreciation, Respect, and Determination. Nominated by their teachers, the students are chosen to receive this recognition by demonstrating, through words or deeds, a behavior that adds to a positive school climate.
Gabriela Moreno, a second grade student in Mrs. Mejia’s class was recognized when she “offered to give up her recess time to stay in with a student who couldn’t participate due to a recent injury.” Damarian Destra, a first grade student, returned money to his teacher, Mrs. Jedra, which he found in the hallway.
Teacher Maryclair Haubruck wanted her fourth grade student, Xavier Sample, recognized for reaching out to assist another student during a lesson and stating, “That’s my job to be a good friend and help people.” In addition to the Awesome Acts program, students have been benefiting from the character lessons taught throughout the year by school counselor Nicole Divenuta and included in the teacher’s daily lessons. “Our teachers are not only teaching academics but developing social and emotional attitudes that are necessary for student to be successful throughout their lives”, stated Principal Ferguson. In addition to receiving a certificate at the monthly character education assembly, students are also invited to enjoy lunch with the principal. “I am very proud of our students and the efforts they make to be good citizens and make our school the wonderful place it is”, exclaimed Ferguson.
