536 Participants Fought to End Cancer at the Annual Relay For Life of Cranford
58 teams and 536 people participated in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Cranford’s 12th annual event on May 17th, 2019, at Hillside Avenue School.
The event raised over $128,000 to help the American Cancer Society save lives through groundbreaking cancer research, education and risk reduction efforts, and free information and critical services for people with cancer who need them.
“The Cranford Community once again outdid itself, not only with the money raised but with the spirit that was brought to the event”, said Paul Skelton, committee member.
The following three teams were recognized for their extraordinary fundraising efforts: Baker’s Dozen $10,227, Cougars Crush Cancer $9,258, Team Angela $8,955 and Killcancer $8,634. Baker’s Dozen was a brand new team to Relay lead by Danny Hickey.
Thank you to our Signature Level sponsors: Hallen Construction, MWT Builders, Cranford Jaycees, and Marino’s Seafood Restaurant. The Cranford Fire Department once again grilled hamburgers for all participants throughout the event free of charge.
Thank you to our generous local businesses for catering the Survivor Dinner: Perrotti’s, Shoprite of Garwood, Starbuck’s and Frenchy’s Bar & Grill. Many other businesses posted signs for us, donated gift cards or hosted fundraisers over the past six months.
Long Time Committee member Frank Vito added “One of the best Cranford Relays I’ve been part of in my 12 years! Everything ran smoothly!”
The committee would like to thank the Superintendent of Cranford Schools, Dr Scott Rubin, the Township committee and the Cranford Police and Fire departments for their continued support.
The Relay For Life movement unites more than 4 million participants across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all. The Cranford Relay For Life event is a community gathering where teams and individuals camp out at Orange Avenue School or Hillside Avenue School and take turns walking or running around a track for twelve hours. Teams raise funds in the months leading up to the event. Cancer survivors are the celebrities of the event and walk the first lap to officially start the Relay.
Entertainment was provided by the Cranford High School Jazz band, Somer Smith, Gina Ricardo, Gianni Vivas and Erin Blake singing the National Anthem. DJ Zach Shectman kept the music going all night, with the CHS Dance Team performing their annual Relay dance. For the 7th year, Terry Loneker led the whole crowd in a fun, energetic Zumba class.

About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of 4 million volunteers started by Dr Gordon Klatt in 1985. As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society’s efforts have contributed to a 22 percent decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. since 1991, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. Thanks in part to our progress; 14.5 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will celebrate more birthdays this year. We’re determined to finish the fight against cancer. We’re finding cures as the nation’s largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, ensuring people facing cancer have the help they need and continuing the fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more.
For more information, to get help, or to join the fight, call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
