Community Awards Night
Jim D’Arcy, Cranford VFW Post #335
It was quite a night at the VFW Post in Cranford on Wednesday, May 4th, 2022, as the annual Community Awards Night was held. A good crowd was on hand to witness recognition given out based on individual’s contributions to the greater Cranford community or for special services to our veterans or veterans’ issues.
Of special note was the Patriot Pen Awards which is an annual essay contest featuring local sixth to eighth grade students. The patriotic theme of this year’s contest was “How can I be a good American”. All three finalists were eighth grade students at Orange Avenue School and the judging proved to be a tough task as they all submitted wonderfully intelligent essays. The winner was Eliana Ruan, who received a great applause after reading her essay to the audience. The second and third place winners were Darby Canedo, and Elisabeth Wallin. All the winners received a cash prize as well as a certificate of appreciation.
Molly Walsh a student at Cranford High School won the VFW “Voice of Democracy” speech contest with her well-delivered entry on the topic “Where do we go from here?” Ms. Walsh received a cash prize and certificate of appreciation as well.
The Cranford Policeman of the Year was given to Detective Ryan Gerrity for his professionalism and outstanding performance of his duties. The Cranford Fireman of the year was awarded to Robert Moran for his emergency CPR response in saving a citizen whose life was in danger due to a seizure. The Cranford Emergency Medical Technician of the year was Kent Lucas for his years of dedicated service to the Emergency Squad.
Teachers of the year in Cranford were also recognized at the ceremony, with Elementary School teacher Christine Eulas of Hillside Avenue School; Middle School teacher, Michael Seaman of Orange Avenue School; and Cranford High School teacher Marlene Soto, all being awarded for their inclusion of veterans causes and issues in their classroom curriculum.
The Cranford Scout of the Year was Joshua Schwartz of BSA Troop 75.
A special recognition was made to Julia Pinho of the popular Pinho’s Bakery in Roselle for her continued support of the Cranford VFW Post and its activities. Her unselfish donations to the Post has made her and her business a Post favorite.
