Girl Scouts of Cranford Honored by Township Council in Recognition of Girl Scout Week
Dozens of Girl Scouts from Cranford Service Unit 48 gathered on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at the Cranford Municipal Building to be honored by the Cranford Township Council as it issued a proclamation recognizing March 9 – 16, 2019 as Girl Scout Week. The proclamation also highlighted the many hours of community service completed each year by the local non-profit organization. According to members of the leadership team, since August of 2018 members of the Girl Scouts of Cranford have dedicated more than 1,800 hours in community service.
Multiple events are planned for the week beginning with a special fundraising breakfast on Saturday, March 9 from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. The pancake breakfast at Applebee’s in Clark will support the Girl Scouts of Cranford Scholarship program (cost $10 per person). The event is open to the community and all are welcome to attend.
Other events for the week include a mass at St. Michael’s Church in Cranford, a Shabbat at Temple Beth El Mekor Chayim in Cranford, and a special celebration at Calvary Lutheran Church which will focus on Girl Scout Ways. In addition individual Girl Scout Troops are planning special events at their local schools.
“We are honored to be recognized by the Cranford Township Council for our service to the community,” said Kristin Santos, the service unit manager for Girl Scouts of Cranford Service Unit 48. “Girl Scout Week is a wonderful way to celebrate our contributions and to re-energize for the work and service we have planned for the future. From our youngest Girl Scout Daisy’s to our graduating high school Ambassadors, we each contribute and make a difference.”
Girl Scout Junior Olivia Torsone from Troop 40013 was in attendance to accept the proclamation. When asked by Mayor Patrick Giblin to share her favorite part of being a Girl Scout, she said “My favorite part of being a Girl Scout in Cranford is that we are all together, not separate, we are all united as one community.”
The Girl Scouts of Cranford boasts over 1,100 Girl Scout Members in 71 troops and Juliette’s making it one of the largest non-profit organizations in town. The Cranford Service Unit is a part of the Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ) Council which is part of the Girl Scouts of the USA. This event is for parents/guardians of children entering kindergarten and first grade in the fall of 2019. The information session will be Monday, March 18 from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Cranford Community Center, 220 Walnut Avenue, Cranford.
