Cranford Dar Donates Children’s Book To Library For Black History Month

Crane’s Ford Daughters of the American Revolution presented the book “Patriots of African Descent in the Revolutionary War” to the Cranford Public Library Children’s Department for Black History Month. “Many children do not know that African indentured servants, as well free blacks and slaves, all assisted in the founding of our nation. There were between 5,000 and 20,000 patriots of African and Native American descent who served in the Continental Forces under the command of General George Washington.
The new picture book “Patriots of African Descent in the Revolutionary War: Part 1”is historical fiction, told by the family historian to his great-grandson about their family’s military and patriotic service as African-Americans during the Revolutionary War. The two are direct descendants of two patriots. One was a free black man, Sergeant Isaac Brown, who served in the 7th, 11th, and 15th Virginia Regiments of the Continental Line. Readers eight and older can be fascinated as they learn about our country’s forgotten patriots.
Author Marion T. Lane is a retired public school educator. Originally from Philadelphia, she now resides in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Her new book is titled “More Than One Ancestry.”She is an African-American member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Society of Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge.”
Fostering knowledge of and preserving our American History is a main focus of the DAR. It is a national service organization of women who have ancestry to participants of the American Revolution, through both combat and those who provided goods and services for the American cause. The website is dar.org to learn more.
