The Crane’s Ford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently visited the Brookside Place Elementary School Brownie Troop #40706 at the Cranford Community Center. Mary Leonard, Regent and Barbara Krause, Historian presented the program. The girls viewed a DVD produced by the National Society DAR explaining the founding of the society and their work worldwide. At the local level, they explained what the chapter does for the Township of Cranford by presenting NSDAR Historic Preservation awards, Conservation awards, Women in the Arts awards and Women in American History awards. The chapter also presents an award for excellence in American History and the Good Citizen award to a graduating Cranford High School senior.
Mary Leonard and Barbara Krause also explained their ancestry and how they discovered a patriot of the American Revolution that allowed them to join the DAR. The Brownies asked many questions during the presentation and went home with handouts and a flag from the Crane’s Ford chapter.
The NSDAR is a volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, historic preservation and better education for children. Membership is open to any woman 18 years or older who can prove lineal, bloodline descent for an ancestor who aided in achieving American Independence.
