“Classically Black” Piano Recital
Richard C. Alston, internationally renowned concert pianist and lecturer, will perform a recital of piano compositions by composers of African descent on Sunday, October 22nd at 4:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of St John the Baptist, 2018 Dewitt Terrace in Linden.
The program includes music for piano composed by a range of men and women of African heritage who are recognized for their contributions to classical music. Works of Nathaniel Dett, William Grant Still, Florence Price, Chevalier de Saint-George and others will be presented in an exciting afternoon of exceptional and captivating music.
Alston received his Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees in piano performance from The Juilliard School of Music in New York City and has performed extensively throughout the United States notably at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and the Metropolitan Opera in their 1992 production of “Porgy and Bess.” Recently, Alston has retired as Associate Professor and Coordinator of Essex County College’s Performing Arts Dept.
