Students and staff Honor Our Veterans
Clark Public Schools
Students at Frank K. Hehnly Elementary School and Valley Road Elementary School recently participated in ceremonies to honor our veterans in recognition of Veterans Day.
At Frank K. Hehnly School the veterans, many of whom were family members of current students, were introduced by Principal Shirley Bergin. Students also shared information on famous war memorials. Mr. Alex DiFabio’s select choir and the assembly sang “Thank You, Soldier”. A moving moment of silence was held when Ciro Cutrona and Xyani Figueroa played “Taps”. The assembly closed with the select choir singing “God Bless the USA”.
At Valley Road School, the veterans, also many of whom were family members, were introduced. A short video was shown on Principal Joe Beltramba’s visit to Honor Flight, a non-profit organization dedicated to transporting as many United States military veterans as possible to see the war memorials in Washington, D.C., at no cost to the veterans. Valley Road students wrote letters to these veterans earlier this year. Some veterans spoke about what they learned from being in the military. A representative from each class placed a flag in a bucket and a wreath, which will be displayed outside of the school, and presented them in honor of the veterans. Music Teacher Trish Sauer led the students in the singing of “America”. Students then individually thanked the veterans. Students were then broken up into groups to speak to the veterans. The ceremony ended with the veterans marching through the halls to students and staff cheering and thanking them as patriotic music played.
