March Madness at the Summit Library
March is coming in like a lion at the Summit Free Public library with programs that will entertain, entice, and enrich every member of the family!
For the birds! On Saturday, March 14 from 2-3 p.m. we’ll be presenting Welcome Home Your New Neighbors: Spring Birds. Providing good nesting habitat through vegetation or by providing nest boxes is a great way to have a closer interaction with nature. This nesting program, presented by nature enthusiast Pete Axelrod, the Education and Community Outreach Coordinator at Wild Birds Unlimited, is an informative discussion on how to create and manage safe, natural and artificial nesting options in the backyard. Watching young birds grow from hatchlings to flying off on their own as fledglings is great fun for all the family and a fantastic way to bring the family closer to nature.
We’ll be celebrating New Jersey Maker’s Day on Saturday, March 21, with a full day of programming focused on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. There will be literally something for everyone—adults, teens, and kids. There will be two craft classes for adults and teens: Make Your Own: Knitting without Needles (9:30 a.m.) and Make Your Own: Pysanky Decorated Eggs (1 p.m.). Starting at 10 a.m. we’ll be having a special Dad-urday STEAM Storytime (open to moms and caregivers, too!). At 2 p.m. kids in grades 1-6 are invited to Make Your Own: Unicorn Headband and there will be a Scratch Basics Workshop open to kids in grades 3-6 at 2 p.m., sponsored by Words and Pictures Creative Services. From 2-4 p.m. there will be an open Maker Fest Fun-for-All where everyone is welcome to make crafts, build with Legos, and watch the library’s 3-D printer make some cool creations! The Make Your Own classes are sponsored by our Friends of the Summit Free Public Library. Space is limited in these programs and registration is required for all but the Maker Fest Fun-for-All.
Celebrate the centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment! The month wraps up with a program sponsored by the Beacon Fire Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as speaker Pat Sanftner presents Three New Jersey Suffragists on Tuesday, March 31 from 7-8:30 p.m. Sanftner’s lecture will examine three women from New Jersey who changed the role of women nationally 100 years ago. Her talk will cover suffragist Alice Paul, the primary mover of the National Woman’s Party; Alison Ball Turnball Hopkins and Julia Simpson Harlbut, who were Paul’s first and second in command in New Jersey.
