Garwood Library News
The Garwood Library remains closed. Although the doors are closed, feel free to return your books to the library book drop located in the Library parking lot. It is emptied daily. It is not necessary to return your books. The due date on all library material is extended until the Library reopens.
The Library and Historical Committee continue to help document history. The Library has teamed up with the Historical Committee to document the impact of Covid 19 on the people of Garwood. Between now and whenever the quarantine ends, we ask those who live and or work in Garwood to share their personal experiences through pictures or words (1500 words or less) by sending their submission via email to garwoodlibrary@garwood.org.
The library has issued the Photo History Challenge to all its residents from June 1 through July 31. Here are the rules: 1. Snap a picture of Garwood with an image that represents the impact of the Coronavirus on our community. 3. Email your picture to garwoodlibrary@garwood.org. Your picture may be posted on the Library’s Facebook and Instagram page. Best pictures, as decided by the Garwood Library staff, will be mailed a $50 Amazon card.
On Tuesday, June 9 2020 at 3:00 p.m., join Iditarod musher, writer and wilderness advocate, Karen Land, and her dogs in a Zoom presentation. She will discuss how to raise and train sled dogs and how to prepare for a 1000-mile dog sled race. Audience participation is encouraged. Great for all ages from PreK to retired adults. Check the Events section of Garwood Public Library’s website for the Zoom link. Wear your favorite winter hat to the presentation.
Garwood Public Library will host Family Trivia Night on Thursday, June 18 at 7 via Zoom. Questions will be geared towards elementary school students but all family members are welcome. No prizes for the winner, just bragging rights. Check the Events section of Garwood Public Library’s website for the Zoom link.
Are you interested in exploring your family tree, but don’t know where to begin? Join genealogy expert, Randi Koenig to learn basic strategies about tracking your kinfolk including: starting with what you know, staying organized and not missing clues. Audience questions are welcome. The presentation will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, June 24 at 7 p.m.
Don’t forget about the library’s digital service. Hoopla offers thousands of digital books, audio books, comics, music, movies and more. Patrons may check out 5 Hoopla items a month. If you have any trouble accessing Hoopla, please call 908-789-1670 or email (Garwoodlibrary@garwood.org) the Library for assistance. The Library also added a new digital database of children’s books on our website provided free of charge from Mid America books. This service has unlimited checkouts and no library card or PIN information is required. We also added the digital version of the Westfield Leader and Scotch Plains Times to our website. You may also want to check out some of our online databases including Heritage Quest, a comprehensive treasury of American genealogical sources or Rosetta Stone, a language learning database.
