Hispanic Heritage Month
Berkeley Heights Public Schools
Students at Mountain Park and Thomas P. Hughes Schools have been learning about Hispanic Heritage Month with a focus on understanding the idea that just because someone speaks Spanish doesn’t necessarily make them Spanish. Spanish is a global language spoken by millions of people across many countries and cultures primarily in Latin America, the U.S. and Spain. People from Spain are considered Spanish, however individuals from Latin American countries such as Mexico, Argentina or Colombia identify as Hispanic or Latino not Spanish. It’s important to recognize the cultural diversity within Spanish-speaking communities and not assume someone’s background based solely on the language they speak. Speaking Spanish connects many cultures but each one has its own unique history and identity.
