The Mountainside Public Library has scheduled the following programs for August 2018. The Library will be closed on Saturdays during August and on September 1.
Tuesday Night Movies (Showtime is 6:30 p.m. for each movie):
All Saints (2017, PG) will be shown on August 7. All Saints is based on the inspiring true story of salesman-turned-pastor Michael Spurlock (John Corbett) and a group of refugees from Southeast Asia. Together, they risked everything to plant seeds for a future that might just save them all.
The Florida Project (2017, R) is our offering on August 14.
The Florida Project tells the story of a precocious six year-old and her ragtag group of friends whose summer break is filled with childhood wonder, possibility and a sense of adventure while the adults around them struggle with hard times.
Home Again (2017, PG-13) will be screened on August 21.
Recently separated from her husband, Alice decides to start over by moving back to her hometown of Los Angeles with her two young daughters. During a night out on her 40th birthday, Alice meets three aspiring filmmakers who happen to be in need of a place to live. Alice agrees to let the guys stay in her guest house temporarily, but the arrangement ends up unfolding in unexpected ways. Home Again is a story of love, friendship, and the families we create. And one very big life lesson: Starting over is not for beginners.
Our final offering of the month on August 28 will be Victoria & Abdul (2017, PG-13).
The extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria’s remarkable rule. When Abdul Karim, a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favor with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy.
Brown Bag Academy, Mondays in August at 1:15 p.m.
The current course in our very popular Great Courses series concludes this month. “How to Listen To and Understand Great Music” presented by Professor Robert Greenberg, will end on August 6. The “students” enjoyed Professor Greenberg so much that they voted to take another of his courses, “The Symphony”, starting on August 13. The great Bohemian-born composer Gustav Mahler once said, “A symphony must be like the world. It must embrace everything.” Over the course of its nearly 300-year life, the symphony has indeed embraced almost every trend to be found in Western concert music. Bring your lunch; coffee, tea and cookies are provided. Come early to get your seat!
“The Artful Easel”, Thursday, August 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Join Lori DeVine and discover your inner artist while creating your own masterpiece on canvas to take home. No art experience is necessary! We will provide the design and all of the art supplies in this step-by-step, instructor led program. (There is a $25 fee to cover the cost of the materials.) A little time to paint, a little time to socialize and a whole lot of fun! This program is limited to 20 participants, so call (908-233-0115) to register!
“Aging Services Kiosk” Friday, August 10 at 11:00 a.m.
Donna Farrell of The Union County Department of Human Services Division on Aging & Disability Resource Connection will be at the library again to provide information about home delivered meals, respite care, home care, adult day care, support services for caregivers and more.

Story Time at the Pool, Wednesdays, August 8 – 29 from 3:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Join Miss Elizabeth at the Mountainside Community Pool for children’s stories pool side. Take a break from the water to listen to a story! Open to Mountainside Community pool members only.
Summer Reading Wrap Up Parties. For children on Thursday, August 30 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
and for adults on Friday, August 31 at 1:30 p.m. For the children, there will be snacks, board games, puzzles, crafts, prizes and a book for everyone to keep! And, at 3:00 p.m., “My Neighbor Tortoro”, an anime movie classic from Hayao Miyazaki will be shown (Rated G). This movie is perfect for all ages, even older anime fans will love this story, too!
