On July 7, SCLSNJ’s Watchung Library branch hosted Drawing Out Your Hero, a program sponsored by the Friends of Watchung Library. The artist who presented the program, Linda Howe, gave the library two of her demonstration prints: Keep on Swimming and Here Comes the Sun. She also donated a re-purposed Pegasus sign called Imagine.
Howe presented a studio class on “touch drawing” printing, teaching the children how to create images with their fingers, hands, and a few optional tools. Children prepared printing plates and then created drawings. All kinds of animals, flowers, scenes and messages emerged when the papers were pulled from the plates.
“It all started in a library in Fairfield, Connecticut,” says artist and storyteller, Linda Howe. “An artist came to the library to say how he drew horses.”
After the program, Linda couldn’t stop drawing them either. “I was going to be world’s most famous equine artist!” Linda became a professional artist at a time when the New York art scene wasn’t featuring animals. However, her talents drew her to teach children art and to tell them stories.
About Linda Howe
Howe has been exhibiting her work at libraries, galleries, schools and nature centers since 1974. Her murals are on permanent exhibit at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in Philadelphia and at the Ludington Library in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. In addition to her work as an artist, Howe has also been a professional storyteller for the past twenty years, using inspirational poetry and puppetry as part of the process.
