ALT Visiting Author Day with Melissa Sweet
On May 1, 2019, the hallways at Angelo L. Tomaso (ALT) Elementary School were decorated with spectators and oversized balloons reminiscent of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in anticipation of the arrival of a very special guest. The festive school decorations were student art creations curated by the passionate ALT librarian, Mrs. Susan Jackson. The artwork highlighted one of the many subjects written and illustrated by the prolific award-winning visiting author/illustrator of “Balloons Over Broadway”, and guest of ALT, Melissa Sweet.
The students of ALT were intrigued and inspired to learn New Jersey native Sweet’s behind the scenes creative process and intricate art techniques employed in creating her books. “The Tomaso School is extraordinary,” said Sweet. “Not only were the students prepared and enthusiastic with their creative artwork lining the halls, their thoughtful questions made it evident they were well-versed in my work,” she continued.
Throughout the day, Ms. Sweet addressed groups of students with her presentation. She even hosted a lunchon with a small group of students who won a contest to dine with her. Every student from the school received a signed copy of one of Ms. Sweet’s books courtesy of the ALT PTO to continue their love of reading and share at home what they learned. “Rarely do I see such community effort between the school, students and PTO,” said Sweet. It made for a rich and rewarding experience and I was honored to be invited.”
