OCEANS OF POSSIBILITIES: SUMMER READING 2022
Through August 12

1-ON-1 TECH HELP
Every Monday, 2-4 pm, Online or In-Person
Chat with a librarian 1-on-1 about anything tech! Whether it’s our library apps for eBooks, audiobooks or streaming shows, or any general technology question, like using your smartphone, Internet, and email skills, we’re here for you. 25-minute appointments can be in-person or via Zoom; we can also accept walk-ins if time is available. TECH BASICS

iPhone Basics
Tuesday, August 2, 10:30-11:30 am, Online
Join us for a casual demo of some of the basic features of iPhones, like how to add, delete and rearrange apps, how to share web pages and articles, and some useful settings for a less frustrating phone. Afterwards, we’ll have plenty of time for questions, so bring some! The demo will use an iPhone 11, but most modern iPhones will be similar.

GRAPHIC DESIGN WITH CANVA

Looking for a free, easy-to-use graphic design tool? Canva.com lets you easily create social media posts, flyers, and more, plus it offers a huge collection of free-to-use templates and images for your creations. Join us for an overview of what’s possible in Canva, and how to use the editor tools to full effect. Open to adults & teens.

PAPER QUILLING
Wednesday August 3, 7-8 pm, In Person
Try your hand at twisting up some fabulous handmade shapes of paper with special quilling tools, then turning them into unique pieces of decorative art! Great for notecards, thank you cards, & more! Grab a friend and enjoy some time out.

NARRATIVE THREADS WITH THE MUSEUM OF EARLY TRADES AND CRAFTS

For centuries, people in New Jersey have been producing a stunning variety of textiles. Discover some historic pieces from the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts collection including quilts, woven textiles, and lace pieces. Participants will handle and explore some of the complex materials and tools involved in making textiles.

COLLEGE PREP: MAKING YOUR COMMON APP LESS COMMON
Wednesday, August 10, 3-4 pm, Online
For students entering grade 11 or 12.
Presented by CollegeWise! The Common Application gives you a lot of opportunities to tell your story in a way that admissions directors will find compelling. We don’t like to have missed opportunities on an application, so we’ll go through each part of the Common App and show you where you can inject your personality and where you can protect your shortcomings. We’ll also share how admission officers use the information you give them to make admission decisions.

Janis is back with another cross-stitch project: plastic canvas bookmarks! These are designed with yarn and are easy to make. Keep for yourself or give as a gift.

SNACKS AND A SNEAK PEEK

Grab a snack and hear Janis read a sample chapter (or two) of a BRAND NEW book from our YA collection in the Teen Space! The book will be either a Young Adult (YA) or Middle Grade (MG) title.

BUBBLE BLAST AT THE LIBRARY
Friday, August 12, 4-5 pm, In Person
In-person program for ages up to 12. Kids, join us outside at the library for our SECOND annual Bubble Blast! Create giant bubbles using a variety of household items. Make bubbles of all shapes and sizes! Program will take place in the field by the parking lot. It will be one big bubblelicious time!

AFTERNOON MOVIE
Thursday, August 18, 3:30-5:30 pm,
In Person
In-person event for children of all ages. Come to the library and take a break from the heat! Join us in the auditorium for a fun and relaxing time watching a recently-run movie on our big screen. Families are welcomed to bring their own snacks. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required, just come and join us!

OCEANS OF CREATIVITY!
Crafternoon

For ages 4-12
What does crafts + afternoon equal? Why, crafternoon of course! Kids are invited to drop into the library to make a fun seasonal craft. No registration required, just come and join us.

SUMMER LEGO CHALLENGE!
Monday, August 29, 4-5 pm, In Person
For ages 4-12 years
Calling all Legomaniacs- come and build! We will give a theme for a challenge, then see what the kids can create using the library’s Lego collection. After the class, the Lego sculptures created will be on display.
Registration required.

TOY SLEEPOVER AT THE LIBRARY
August 22-30
Kids, it’s time for our summer “Toys Sleepover at the Library”! Bring a lovey/stuffed animal to the library, and we will place the toys on the library bookshelves for a nice relaxing good night’s rest! We sure hope the stuffed animals don’t get into any mischief while they are here, but if they do, we will let the kids know!! We may share photos on social media showing all the fun things the stuffed animals did during their sleepover. To sign up your stuffed animal, bring them into the library between August 22 and August 30.

STAY & PLAY:

For ages up 2 to 5 years
Children with caregivers are invited to the library to “stay and play!” Stay & Play is a program for young children using toys to encourage play with an emphasis on STEM and developmental skills. Registration required.

Every Month
Stop by the library to pick up a DIY craft kit to finish at home. All materials and instructions will be provided. Look for a new project every month! While supplies last.

SPICE KITS
Add a little spice to your life with our spice kits! Stop by the Information Desk to pick up a pre-measured world spice or blend. You’ll also get information on the spice as well as a recipe or two that you can make at home. New spice kits each month. Kits are available while supplies last for Millburn Library cardholders. One pack per family, please.
