Andrew Jacobs Wins National Design Competition
New Providence local Andrew Jacobs, a current student at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), was recently announced the winner of the second annual HD/West Elm student Product Design Competition, a national competition that gives students the opportunity to have their original designs manufactured by West Elm.
This year’s competition tasked students with designing a family of tables that are aesthetically neutral and able to work with a number of seating heights. Andrew’s winning Volum collection included pieces minimal in form but rich in material, creating a platform in which the materials could shine and feel personable and intimate. Andrew received $5,000 and will work with West Elm to refine and produce a selection of his designs.
SCAD is a preeminent source of knowledge in building arts around the world and has been preparing students for professional careers in this multi-billion dollar industry for more than 40 years. As a student in SCAD’s internationally ranked furniture design degree program, Andrew has access to professional-level resources and advanced software that take students’ creative ideas to production-ready prototypes. SCAD’s furniture design faculty and mentors make up the brightest minds in the industry; representatives from top brands in furniture design come from all over the world to recruit SCAD talent just like Andrew for post-graduate positions. In fact, in a recent survey of SCAD alumni, 99 percent were employed, pursuing further education or both within 10 months of graduation.
