Senior Happenings at the DeCorso Community Center

DeCorso Community Center Offers Free Classes & Activities

The DeCorso Community Center, home to the New Providence Senior Citizen Club, offers a variety of free classes and activities for New Providence seniors. The Club meets on Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m., with speakers on a variety of topics, musical performances, or “Club Days” to celebrate Club members’ birthdays and socialize. Exercise with Arthritis: The Exercise with Arthritis class will be back by popular demand on Thursdays, September 5, 12, 19 and October 10, 24 and 31 at 11:00 a.m. Our experienced instructor Myriam Gabriel will lead participants through various exercises that are suitable for those living with arthritis.

Biology Class for New Providence Seniors: The “Selected Topics in Biology and Life Sciences” class for seniors, taught by Professor Bill Dunscombe of Union County College, will begin a new semester in September. These engaging classes will be held on Mondays September 16 – December 2 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Free to New Providence seniors; $20 for out of town residents.

Country Western Picnic: The Club will host its annual Welcome Back Country Western Picnic on Wednesday, September 25 at 12:00 p.m. Come celebrate the beginning of another great year at the NPSCC with plentiful food and wonderful entertainment. Purchase $18 tickets in advance.

Free Weekly Exercise Classes for New Providence Seniors

Our instructors will work with you at whatever level you are comfortable. Ask your doctor which classes would be appropriate for you. All exercise class participants must complete a registration form with a medical waiver. Please check the calendar for specific dates. Stop by 15 East 4th Street and give a class a try!

In Control – Weights and floor exercises develop arm, chest, inner core, and leg muscles. Stretches body and improves balance. Mondays at 8:30 a.m.

Chair Yoga – Improves flexibility and muscle strength. Reduces stress and increases relaxation. Mondays at 11:00 a.m.

Balance and Conditioning – Light weight training, balance and coordination drills. Helps range of motion, confidence, and energy levels. Tuesdays at 9:45 a.m.

Tai Chi – Slow, fluid movements. Relaxes body and mind. Increases balance control, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m.

Fit and Healthy – Aerobic warm up followed by balance and strength workout. No floor work. Thursdays at 9:30 a.m.

Zumba – Latin dance inspired fitness program. Improves strength, posture, and flexibility. Fridays at 9:30 a.m.
