Lauren Buchanan of Union Receives “Woman of the Year” Award
Union County College scholar-athlete, Lauren Buchanan, of Union, received the “Woman of the Year” Award at the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day, held at Seton Hall University on February 4, 2019. As the goalie for the College’s soccer team, her performance on the field strongly contributed to the team qualifying for the 2018 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women’s Soccer National Tournament where they finished third in the nation. Lauren is an education major who maintains a 4.0 grade point average.
In addition to receiving the “Woman of the Year” Award, Lauren ended the season as the NJCAA Division III top goalie in two categories and was selected for the Scholar All-America Second Team by the United Soccer Coaches Association for her accomplishments in the classroom and on the field. While maintaining her perfect grade point average, she started in all 18 games of the season. To be named to the Scholar All-America team, a student-athlete must be a sophomore, maintain a 3.0 or higher grade point average, and start in more than 50% of the games.
“Lauren is a bright young woman who is committed to her studies and to the team. Her hard work paid off both on and off the field,” stated Head Coach Angie Correia. “She is an excellent example of the success you can have if you are determined and dedicated to chasing your dreams.”
