Second Street Youth Center Summer Camp and Enrichment Program – “Full Steam Ahead”

Let your child have fun and keep fresh with hands on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Camp. All students have recreation, trips and enrichment in the aforementioned areas. The Second Street Youth Center (SSYC) Summer Camp and Enrichment Program begins Monday, July 2, 2018 and runs through Friday, August 24. The program serves nearly 100 children, many of whom attend the SSYC After School Program and previously attended our Pre-School Program. While most of the attendees are from Plainfield, those from neighboring communities such as North Plainfield, Dunellen, Piscataway, South Plainfield are welcome. Camp activities include arts and crafts, reading time, computer lab, playground games and table games in the multi-purpose room, which also serves as a lunch and healthy snack room. Outside excursions include swimming in a local pool, playing sports, attending professional sports events, visiting science centers, attending theatrical productions, bowling, visiting museums, barbecuing in parks, swimming at the beach, camping overnight and visiting amusement parks and other attractions. Some activities are contingent on funding.
In 2012, SSYC introduced a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) component into its After-School program and in the summer of 2017, we incorporated elements of STEAM into the summer camp program. This and other educational components are an antidote to the “summer slide” and kids return to school in the fall with a greater appreciation of learning.  This past summer, SSYC’s camp provided many opportunities for science and math projects including computer coding, viewing of the solar eclipse, manufacturing slime, baking in a solar oven and planting and harvesting vegetables grown on our grounds. The arts initiative included acting lessons painting, dancing in a Latin style and African drumming.
