Approximately 420 incoming freshmen attended Union High School’s Freshman Orientation program hosted by the School Counseling Department. The day began with a brief informational session for parents led by the UHS administrative team. High School Principal Mr. Corey Lowery provided parents with goals for the school year and additional information regarding daily operations. The four vice-principals were also on hand to assist parents with questions and concerns.
After, staff welcomed the Class of 2021. Students were then placed into smaller groups to attend five different workshop sessions. One session included a presentation by the counseling staff, “Navigating your Path”, which outlined the role of the School Counselor, graduation requirements and updates, as well as where to find support if needed during the school year. Mrs. Kim Osty, 9th grade vice-principal, led a session, “Getting to know UHS” on transitioning to UHS and reviewed policies, procedures, as well as code of conduct. The Peer Ambassador Organization led an interactive piece, “Get Involved,” designed to allow freshmen to ask questions and receive advice from the upperclassmen on a variety of topics. In separate computer labs the School Counselors presented their session “Get Connected” which led the students through registration onto Naviance, the college and career web based computer program that they will be utilizing throughout their high school career. Students were provided with their “Activities Sheet” which they can fill in to record their many accomplishments leading up to senior year. Finally, the Peer Ambassadors gave a group tour entitled “Know your Way” and maps were provided to make navigating the halls on the first day just a little bit easier.
The day ended with the UHS PTA distributing some back to school snack bags for all in attendance. Chromebook distribution through the IT department was also scheduled for later that day.
Supervisor of School Counseling Nicole Ahern shared, “The event was a success and this was the highest attendance for a Freshman Orientation since the program’s inception. Our goal is to have the 9th graders feel a sense of comfort versus anxiety as the school year starts. By allowing them to explore the high school and interact with peers and other students, it sets the stage for a positive transition to high school.”
