The Gallery-on-the-Boulevard at the Kenilworth Public Library is now featuring stunning paintings of iconic New Jersey locations by artist Stephen D’Amato. “Paintings of the Jersey Shore” features familiar images from Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Spring Lake Sea Girt, Cape May and the Wildwoods.
“My focus is primarily is with street scenes, buildings and waterfront areas,” D’Amato said in a written statement. “When looking for interesting subject matter: I sometimes gravitate toward the decay and worn look of an abandoned dock, seedy boardwalk shops, or a loosely dangling street sign.”
Mr. D’Amato has exhibited his work in New Jersey and New York City. He studied art at Syracuse University, Rutgers University and the Art Students League of New York, where he focused on drawing, anatomy and painting. His seaside scenes, painted between 2004 and 2016, will be on display in the library through July 2017.
In choosing locales for new paintings, “I look for a connection to the past, both aesthetically and historically, said Mr. D’Amato. “I feel an affection and spiritual connection with these areas and I continue to search for ways to convey it.”
