Members of Watchung Cub Scout Pack 32 enjoyed another fun-filled family camping experience at the Watchung Mountain District Spring Camporee last month. Despite a dire weather forecast of a massive thunderstorm, those that made the short drive up to Mount Allamuchy Scout Reservation in Stanhope found instead cool temperatures and pockets of sunshine throughout the weekend. For most, this was their first time at Allamuchy. Which meant they got to experience a kid’s zip-line, a huge rock wall, a wide open fishing dam, a rolling brook, and row boats in the picturesqe lake. Additionally, the Scouts kept busy playing carnival games on the parade field, shooting targets at the BB gun and Archery ranges, as well as exploring trails and climbing rocks around camp. After rehearsing throughout the day, the boys flawlessly performed their silly skit, called “Airplane Disaster,” to laughter and applause from the packed house at the lakeside ampitheater. Before heading back to their site for some campfire time, they were privledged to witness the ceremonial retirement of an American Flag by the Boy Scout and Venture patrols on duty.
The Watchung Mountain District in the Patriot’s Path Council holds two Camporees each year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall. Whether a scout and his family come up for just the day full of activities or decide to camp overnight, they always have a wonderful time in the great outdoors. The pack has spare equipment to loan out for any family that wants to try out the overnight Camporee experience. If you or any of your friends are interested in learning more about the outdoor activities that the Cub Scouts do all year long, send an email to pack32chair@gmail.com.
