Summit Department of Community Programs Wins Awards

The Summit Department of Community Programs was recognized by the New Jersey Recreation and Park Association as the recipient of two prestigious awards at their recent Awards Ceremony held in Atlantic City, NJ.
The City of Summit was recognized under the category of “Excellence in Design” for the recent Tatlock Park Tennis Court Project. Completed in the spring of 2016, this project was designed by Tom Miller of Premiere Product Development and was built by Classic Turf of Woodbury, Connecticut. The project was an exceptional example of a public-private partnership bringing together funding from the City of Summit, Union County’s Kids Recreation Trust Fund and a generous donation from the Summit Tennis Association. The total cost of the project was $642,560. Union County’s Kids Recreation Trust Fund contributed $85,000 and the Summit Tennis Association donated $100,000 towards this effort with the balance coming from the City of Summit’s Capital Improvement Fund.
The project was recognized for this public/private partnership along with utilizing this state of the art and environmentally sensitive approach to tennis court replacement. This post-tensioned concrete approach is much like the technology used in bridge building and parking deck construction. It eliminated the need for demolition and disposal of the existing asphalt surface. Along with this technology, the latest Musco LED lighting used in tennis court design was installed complete with timers to allow for maximum use with minimum wasted electricity. The Tatlock Tennis Courts are the home courts for the Summit Middle School Tennis Program sponsored by the Summit Tennis Association. The courts are available to the general public and are the site for the Summit Senior Tennis Program.
Summit also won an award in the category of “Excellence in Special Event Programming” for McMuni’s Doggie Dip held annually at the Summit Family Aquatic Center. This incredibly well received event lets the Summit Family Aquatic Center go to the “dogs” in late September. The four legged swimmers get to enjoy this beautiful facility just like their two-legged family members. The event is so popular that it sells out annually.
