WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH: UNION COUNTY CLERK JOANNE RAJOPPI DISCUSSES HER NEW BOOK

Northern Women in the Aftermath of the Civil War:  The Wives and Daughters of the Brunswick Boys tells the story of the perseverance and stamina of women facing an altered world after the Civil War, many of whom were confronted by widowhood, burdened with returning soldiers addicted to alcoholism or drugs or strained by the care of men suffering from post-traumatic stress.  Rendered economically helpless, a woman like Mary Ann Hamilton with young children –including a daughter considered “insane” at the time – was forced to eke out a living as best she could. This book sheds light on these courageous women and the legacy of dreams and hopes they left their children in the context of a rapidly changing American culture.
A lifelong resident of Union County and former journalist, Joanne Hamilton Rajoppi is a history aficionado.  She is a trustee of the Union County Historical Society, recipient of the Westfield Historical Society Trustee Award and served as Chair of the Union County Sesquicentennial Committee Celebration.  She served as Mayor of her hometown, as Chair of the County  Board of Freeholders and as Assistant Secretary of State for New Jersey.   Presently, she is the Union County Clerk.
