Garden Club of Westfield’s August Garden of the Month

August Garden of the Month

The Garden Club of Westfield has chosen the charming garden of Kaitlin and DJ Betancourt at 917 St. Mark’s Avenue, Westfield, NJ, as its August Garden of the Month. For the six years that the Betancourts have lived there, Mr. Betancourt has worked assiduously to create a garden of excellent design with a thoughtfully chosen selection of plants. Mr. Betancourt had little gardening experience but was inspired when his mother-in-law gave the couple 30 plants as a housewarming gift. These included boxwood, laurel and hollies, which serve as the backbone of the garden. To these Mr. Betancourt added an amazing assortment of plants, which gave more shape and color to the garden. In the spring, a weeping cherry, azaleas, clematis and peonies are in bloom. Then the garden offers color throughout the summer with roses, hydrangeas, crepe myrtle, calla lilies, salvia, black-eyed Susan, rose of Sharon, hibiscus, and summer alliums. The Betancourts’ two young daughters love the butterflies, which visit their butterfly bush. A large assortment of grasses can be found throughout the garden. Montauk daisies will brighten the garden in fall. The Betancourt garden is a jewel for Westfield.
