Picnic in the Park Fellowship, friendship, and laughter

Woman’s Club of Berkeley Heights Picnic in the Park

Submitted by Susan Doyle, WCBH

The Woman’s Club of Berkeley Heights had a picture-perfect day on Tuesday, June 11th to hold its “Picnic in the Park.” President Phyllis McEnroe held a short meeting to remind members of the upcoming Blood Drive that we are co-sponsoring. She also presented Marilyn Skyba with her third-place award in the NJSFWC poetry contest. Marilyn read her wonderful poem about the Fall which was well received with great applause. The members wore red, white, and blue in honor of the upcoming Flag Day. A delicious boxed lunch was enjoyed and enthusiastic social chatter filled the air.

Members participated in a Gentle Olympics to finish the day. Teams competed through bean bag toss, target baskets, hole in one golf, and archery. Our score keeper, Margaret Polimeni, announced the second-place winners, Diana Wilfrid, Joyce Nicastro, and Magdalen Wu. Sue Doyle presented trophies. The score keeper also announced the Official Gentle Olympics first-place champions, Paulette Ferrigno, Phyllis Disturco, Kathy Ennis, and Frances Mignano. Sue awarded this team with trophies and Olympic rings. Win or lose, there was sportsmanship, great athleticism, celebration, and hales of laughter!

The Woman’s Club continued its Civic Engagement co-sponsoring an American Red Cross Blood Drive with the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad on Saturday, June 15th, 9-2. Once again, the goal of 28 pints was surpassed. 33 lifesaving pints was collected. So, between the March 5th Blood Collection of 36 pints and this one, 69 pints were donated all together. Club members manned the recuperation room. Marilyn Skyba, Sue Doyle, Magdalen Wu, Phyllis McEnroe, Margaret Polimeni greeted Donors with kind words, homemade cookies, hand-made thank-you cards, drinks, snacks, and offered resting chairs. It was a wonderful five hours meeting all the Donors who gave selflessly. Club members Marilyn Skyba, Kristina Degenhardt Brusco, and Squad volunteers Jane Brown and ToniAnn Gestone were donors. Many thanks to the bakers, Margaret Polimeni and Katie Eaton for their delicious cookies!

The month of June ended with Phyllis McEnroe, Margaret Polimeni, Diana Wilfrid,  Magdalen Wu, Nancy Yingling, and Susan Doyle out for a summer day’s lunch at the Stage House in Scotch Plains. Fellowship, friendship, and much laughter. We ate, we drank, and we were merry!
