Warrenbrook Senior Center – September 2024

Warrenbrook Senior Center located at 500 Warrenville Road is one of the six county operated Senior Center. Somerset County residents who are 60 years and older are welcome to participate in any of the programs at Warrenbrook Senior Center. They also provide a choice of 4 different meal choices during lunch that seniors can take advantage of during the weekdays. All the programs are free for the registered members. Below is the highlight of some of the programs available at Warrenbrook Senior Center in September.

September 2 – Senior Center Closed in Observance of Labor Day

September 3 & 17, 11 a.m. – Wordle.Wordle is a word-based brain game where participants have six chances to guess a five-letter word. So, dig deep into your vocabulary repertoire and identify some words.

September 4, 11 a.m. – Medicare & Medications Made Affordable for 2025.Prescriptions, healthcare insurance, premiums and co-pays can take up a big chunk of your bank account.  If you have Medicare, it’s essential that you compare costs every year during the Open Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7th) to ensure the best, lowest cost plan for the coming year. Learn how to make the most out of your Medicare dollars and choose the right plan for your individual needs. The trained, certified counselors of SHIP provide free, unbiased, expert information about your Medicare choices.

The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is a statewide program administered by the New Jersey Department of Human Services with financial assistance through a grant from the U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL)

September 5, 11 a.m. – Bingo – Bingo is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers found that playing Bingo has multiple benefits. It promotes socialization, strengthens hand-eye coordination, and improves listening and short-term memory skills.

September 6 & 27, 11 a.m. – Brains n Games and Hand Bells with Adrienne Graubard. Did you know that solving puzzles or challenging yourself with new mind-stretching activities like learning music can stimulate the brain and enhance your creative and critical thinking processes? Join Adrienne for some mind-tingling, brain-stumping word games and a fun-filled musical workout using hand bells.

September 9, 11 a.m. – Annis Boudinot Stockton: The Poet and the General with Joseph Wroblewski. Joseph, center volunteer, will talk about the relationship of Annis Boudinot Stockton, one of the leading female poets of Colonial/Revolutionary America and the wife of Richard Stockton (one of the five Signers of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey) and her poems and correspondences with George Washington.

September 10 & 24, 11 a.m. – Boggle. This is a challenging game that is played using a grid of letters, in which attendees search for words that can be constructed from letters of sequentially adjacent letters. Words must be at least three letters long but may not use the same letter on the grid more than once per word. Then look for words within a larger word. Join us as we try to find as many words as possible.

(Virtual) September 10, 1:30 PM – Monthly Book Club. Meets Every Second Tuesday of the month. Join the Warrenbrook Seniors Book Club members to discuss the book of the month and select the next book to read.  New members are always welcome! **Only for Warrenbrook Senior Center Participants**

September 11, 11 a.m. – Financial Planning Strategies with Gail Abrams from the Law Office of Gail Abrams & Strategic Investment Advisors, LLC. Gail will be addressing the potential changes to the 2025 Tax Act, strategies for tax efficiency, protecting investments in volatile markets & making informed decisions

September 12, 11 a.m. – Breathing Techniques for Mental Wellness with Dr. Prabha Srinivas.  Dr. Prabha Srinivas will be teaching some practices that can be used to distract the mind and induce calm during an anxiety episode. A few techniques can be practiced on a regular basis to develop an ongoing awareness of trigger situations and to calm and regulate the nervous system consistently.

September 13, 10:30 a.m. – Thrill’n & Grill’n Picnic at Colonial Park. The Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater, Basking Ridge and Warrenbrook will converge for a celebration of fun, friends, food, games, and conversation; all set to the wonderful medley of Motown, Beach and Boardwalk music provided by DJ Gio. **For reservations and to make lunch reservations please call (908) 753-9440. Warrenbrook Senior Center will be closed for all the Congregate Activities. Clients are encouraged to visit Basking Ridge Senior Center for lunch after making lunch reservations.

September 16, 11 a.m. – Medicare & You: Cardiovascular Screening & Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Cardiovascular Disease with Cristina Lu, Public Health Nurse – Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services. Medicare offers a comprehensive range of preventive services that goes beyond the “Annual Health Visit.” This includes cardiovascular screenings and preventive measures to detect heart issues early when treatment works best and prevents certain diseases. Utilizing these services ensures your primary provider discusses strategies to lower your risk, helping you stay healthier and live better.

September 17, 11 a.m. – Wildlife! Just Sharks (video). Take the plunge and explore the underwater realm that is reigned by sharks. This documentary goes beyond the “usual suspects” in this family that boasts over 500 species, more than half being less than a meter long, many very timid and harmless. Shed fear and embrace these fish for the fascinating marine creatures that they are.

September 18, 11 a.m. – Emergency Preparedness & Register Ready with Carolyn Solon, Mass Care Coordinator, Somerset County Public Health & Safety/Emergency Management. This presentation offers emergency preparedness tips that both agency staff and consumers can use, as well as an overview of the Register Ready program.

September 19, 11 a.m. – Bingo – This bingo game will be sponsored by Andrea Maceus from AristaCareBingo is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers found that playing Bingo has multiple benefits. It promotes socialization, strengthens hand-eye coordination, and improves listening and short-term memory skills.

September 20 – A visit to Basking Ridge Senior Center. We will be visiting Basking Ridge Senior Center as our yearly trip in September and playing Bingo sponsored by Allaire Health Services. Warrenbrook Senior Center will be closed for all the activities and Congregate Lunch. 

September 20, 11 a.m. – Dot Painting Craft. Dot Painting is a very unique and integral part of Australian Aboriginal Art. We will be painting on glass using Qtips and paint. All supplies will be provided. Pre-registration required. Please call 908-753-9440 for more information.

September 23, 11 a.m. – Musical Entertainment with Clifford Seay. As we transition to fall and the most magical season of the year, Chris Seay will sing songs from 50s, 60s. Let’s sing those songs along with him, dance and create some lasting memories with seniors of Warrenbrook Senior Center.

September 24, 11 a.m. – Junk Drawer Detective with Parul. Junk Drawer Detective is an intriguing mystery solving game where players explore the chaotic realm of a forgotten drawer. As a detective, participants will unravel puzzles, decipher cryptic clues, and piece together the scattered remnants of everyday items to solve mysteries. This immersive game offers a blend of hidden object challenges and brain teasing puzzles, providing an engaging experience as players unlock the secrets hidden within the eclectic contents of a junk drawer. This month we will engage in “Veggie Garden Detective” and “Laundry Day Detective” and “Hood on Book Detective”. 

September 25, 11 a.m. – Navigating the Health Care Field with Randi Goldberg from Archer Law Office. Randi will discuss proactive ways of managing health, staying informed about insurance coverage, and building a relationship with a primary care provider.

September 26, 11 a.m.- Craft – To the Point Place Marker – We will cut & assemble the provided designs to make a bookmark. Add an elastic ribbon that wraps around a book and then slide the cute pencil up or down to point where you left off. All supplies will be provided. Pre-registration required. September 30, 11 a.m. – Immunizations with Shivani Shah from Watchung Walmart Pharmacy.

Shivani will talk about the yearly flu vaccines and how they protect us and others around us by getting vaccinated. Shivani will be providing flu vaccines to the registered clients of Somerset County Senior Centers. By combining this effort, you can ensure a healthy community during the fall season while celebrating all the wonderful aspects of this time of the year.

Besides the above program, the below programs take place on weekly basis.

Yoga with Kartika – Mondays, 10 a.m. This class is open to all levels of skill. Hatha yoga poses can be practiced while either sitting or standing. Hatha yoga will help increase bone density, improve strength, flexibility, and balance while you are immersed in a relaxing class. Expect lots of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. This class is perfect for relieving stress and to help gain an overall sense of well-being. No fee for this ongoing class. Fall Prevention Screening & Education – Mondays, 1 p.m. Aging Well and Balanced: Fall Prevention for Older Adults with Rutgers Doctoral Physical Therapy (DPT) and Doctoral Occupational Therapy (OTD) Programs. Join the Rutgers DPT and OTD faculty and students to engage in balance screenings and education in a variety of areas related to fall prevention. Pre-registration required to schedule times for screenings: 908-753-9440. No program on Monday, September 9th. 

Watercolor Paint Class – Mondays & Wednesdays, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. This is a great opportunity for an experienced artist to meet new people while water coloring. All supplies are included.

Mahjong for Intermediate Players – Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. If you are an intermediate mahjong player and would like to play this game of skill, strategy, and calculation, then join us on Tuesday mornings. Please call 908-753-9440 for more information.

Take Control with Exercise – Tuesdays, 10 a.m. This is an ongoing exercise program, in video form, for all skill levels that can be practiced while either standing or sitting. Zumba Gold with Judith – Tuesdays, 10:15 a.m. Get your blood pumping with some zesty music that will truly inspire a hearty workout. This class is achievable for beginners or others who need modifications to their exercise routine. Build cardiovascular health by challenging your heart and working hip, leg, and arm muscles by performing fun and rhythmic moves while sitting in a chair.Cost is $40 for the 8-week program. Chair Belly Dance – Tuesdays, 1 p.m. This seated dance class is fun for all fitness levels. It offers a workout for the entire body designed to improve posture, flexibility and endurance. No class on September 10th

Bridge Group with Ronnie – Tuesdays, 1 – 4 p.m.
 Bridge is a mentally challenging card game that offers intellectual and social stimulation. Playing bridge regularly stimulates your brain and helps keep your memory active and your brain alert. Join Ronnie and her group as they play bridge on a weekly basis. New members and beginners welcome (lessons available).

Stretch & Strength – Wednesdays, 10 a.m. with Mikaela Kane from Rutgers Co-operative Extension. Mikaela will be leading a 10-week exercise class that involves stretch & strength. Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Strength program is designed to enhance the ability to function in daily life. The exercise can be done with or without weights. The hand weight of 2-5 pounds is recommended, which can be brought by the clients for exercise. No fee for this ongoing class. No class on September 18th.Please call 908-753-9440 for more information. 

Line Dancing with Linda Hyland Thursdays, 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. Line Dancing is so much fun that it doesn’t even seem like exercise! You don’t need a partner; and dancing is an easy way to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. It’s suitable for participants with limited mobility and has been shown to increase cardiovascular and muscular strength and improve coordination and balance as you work through different moves.

Chair Kickboxing – Thursdays, 1 p.m. This fun, heart pumping cardio kickboxing class is for everyone. This workout will be done in a seated position.

Tai Chi with Roger – Fridays, 10 a.m. Tai Chi participants will focus on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long gesture. Studies have shown that some participants have experienced a reduction in pain, fatigue and stiffness and have gained a greater sense of well-being. Tai Chi can help reduce falls, especially for those with balance problems. This program can be practiced while either standing or sitting.
