Warrenbrook Senior Center August 2024

Warrenbrook Senior Center, located at 500 Warrenville Road, is one of the six county operated Senior Center. Somerset County residents who are 60 years and older are welcome to participate in any of the programs at Warrenbrook Senior Center. They also provide a choice of 4 different meal choices during lunch that seniors can take advantage of during the weekdays. All the programs are free for the registered members. Below is the highlight of some of the programs available at Warrenbrook Senior Center in August.

August 5, 11 a.m. – Skin Cancer Awareness & Prevention with Gabriella Dumbrique from Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.Please join us for a discussion about how skin cancer screening and prevention are crucial for maintaining healthy skin and overall well-being. By prioritizing skin health through proactive screenings and preventive practices, individuals can safeguard themselves from the most common yet preventable forms of cancer.

August 5, 1 p.m. – Somerset County Library System of New Jersey. The Somerset County Library System of New Jersey is coming to the Warrenbrook Senior Wellness Center. Come browse a collection of books, movies, music, and more, register or renew your library card, and learn about the services and programs the library has to offer. The library will visit once a month with something new and can accept returns from any of the library branches. 

August 7, 11 a.m. – Healthy Living for Your Brain & Body with Terrina Cherry from Alzheimer’s Association of New Jersey.National Senior Citizen’s Day is this week, and we want to ensure all seniors live healthily and independently for as long as possible!  For centuries, we’ve known that the health of the brain and body are connected. Now science can provide insights into how to make lifestyle choices. Join Terrina to learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity, and social engagement, and how to incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging.

August 8, 11 a.m. – Breathing Techniques for Mental Wellness with Dr. Prabha Srinivas. Dr. Prabha Srinivas will be teaching some practices that can be used to distract the mind and induce calm during an anxiety episode. A few techniques can be practiced on a regular basis to develop an ongoing awareness of trigger situations and to calm and regulate the nervous system consistently.

August 9, 11 a.m. – Candle Collage Craft. Cast a warm glow with colorful tissue paper that can be cut in to strips or geometric designs or abstract shapes and apply the decoupage on glass. All materials will be provided. Pre-registration is required, and supplies are provided. 

August 12, 11 a.m. – Origami with Itoko.Researchers are finding that folding paper can help increase hand-eye coordination, as well as refine motor skills and mental concentration. Itoko Kobayashi will teach us the skills to fold paper and make exciting little paper figurines.

(Virtual) August 13, 1:30 p.m. – Monthly Book Club. Meets Every Second Tuesday of the month. Join the Warrenbrook Seniors Book Club members to discuss the book of the month and select the next book to read.  New members are always welcome! **Only for Warrenbrook Senior Center Participants**

August 14, 10:30 a.m. – Indian Dance with Ms. Ruhika Iyer. Ms. Ruhika Iyer, a recent high school graduate and an aspiring doctor will perform the Bharatnatyam dance to celebrate India’s Independence Day.

August 14, 11 a.m. – India Independence Day with Seema Moondra from Enjoy Explore India. As India celebrates Independence on August 15th, Seema Moondra will walk us through the rich culture of India, and teach us how to drape a saree. We will sample some Indian dishes brought by Warrenbrook Senior Center patrons.

August 15, 29, 11 a.m. – Bingo with Bob Mazet.Bingo is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers found that playing Bingo has multiple benefits. It promotes socialization, strengthens hand-eye coordination, and improves listening and short-term memory skills.

August 16, 11 a.m. – Craft  Stained glass technique using Vellum Paper – Debbie Perez will teach us how to create a stained-glass look using Vellum paper. Pre-registration is required, and supplies are provided. Made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

August 19, 11 a.m. – Slips & Falls with Dante Searcy, DPT, from JAG Physical Therapy –Dante will highlight common hazards in the environment that contribute to accidents. He will also emphasize preventative measures and home modifications to reduce the risk of falls. 

August 21, 11 a.m. – Rutgers Health Screenings. The Rutgers Health Service Corps Interprofessional Health Screening Team will offer comprehensive services including blood pressure screening, diabetes education, medication review, nutrition education, brain health activities, and other health-related assessments and education to members of the Warrenbrook Senior Wellness Center.

August 22, 11 a.m.  Jeopardy with Jean. Join Jean Mazet, center member and volunteer who will lead the group in an interactive game of Jeopardy in which categories include In the Kitchen, Childhood Toys, As Time Goes By, Weather Idioms, Potpourri, and Classic Radio.

August 23, 11 a.m. – Summer Trivia with Hirey Molligoda from Assisting Hands. Hirey will be leading the Summer Trivia questions and test your knowledge on all things summer related as we gather for a fun-filled morning of questions, laughter, and friendly competition.

August 26, 11 a.m. – America & World War 1 (with a focus on New Jersey’s Role) with Cynthia Affinito. When the Great War began in Europe in the summer of 1914, the United States was neither a global leader nor a military power.  By the time the war ended in 1918, Uncle Sam was on his way to becoming both.  In between, as America first tried to stay out of the war before ultimately heading “Over There,” New Jersey played a major role in the politics and preparations of the time.  This session will explore the Garden State’s many connections to the war, including the Black Tom attack, the logistics of troop training and deployment, Hoboken’s role as the main port of embarkation, and Thomas Edison’s role in military preparations.  Famous combatants from New Jersey, and the state’s role in the aftermath of the war, will also be discussed. Made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission.  

August 28, 11 a.m. – Musical Entertainment and Caricatures with Sal Di-Bianca. While Sal performs variety of popular songs from past decades, clients will be able to take pictures with caricatures from the world of music in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

August 30, 11 a.m. – Obesity & Cardiovascular Health with Dr. Nancy Phillips & Dr Samar Hameed, Principal Investigator – IMA Clinical Research. Drs. Phillips and Hameed will talk about Obesity and Cardiovascular disease, with emphasis on risk factors, signs and symptoms, healthy lifestyle, and medical interventions.

Besides the above program, the below programs take place on weekly basis.

Stretch – Mondays, 10 a.m. Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Warrenbrook Senior Center volunteer, Kanwaljit Minhas, will guide you through the exercises to improve flexibility & balance. No fee for this ongoing class. Please call 908-753-9440 for more information.

Studio 60+ – 1st and 3rd Mondays, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Warrenbrook Seniors will meet twice a month to plan the events they are interested in. Some examples include brainstorming for quarterly community service projects, craft work, musical entertainment, and Jeopardy. They will also practice for their quarterly musical entertainment and drama. All senior center members are invited to participate in this planning and participating club.

Mahjong for Intermediate Players – Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. If you are an intermediate mahjong player and would like to play this game of skill, strategy, and calculation, then join us on Tuesday mornings.

Zumba Gold with Judith – Tuesdays, 10:15 a.m. Get your blood pumping with some zesty music that will truly inspire a hearty workout. This class is achievable for beginners or others who need modifications to their exercise routine. Build cardiovascular health by challenging your heart and working hip, leg, and arm muscles by performing fun and rhythmic moves while sitting in a chair. Cost is $40 for the 8-week program. Bridge Group with Ronnie – Tuesdays, 1 – 4 p.m. Bridge is a mentally challenging card game that offers intellectual and social stimulation. Playing bridge regularly stimulates your brain and helps keep your memory active and your brain alert. Join Ronnie and her group as they play bridge every week. New members and beginners welcome (lessons available).

Gentle Yoga with Jillian – Tuesdays, 1 p.m. and Thursdays, 10 a.m. This class is open to all levels of skill. Hatha yoga poses can be practiced while either sitting or standing. Hatha yoga will help increase bone density, and improve strength, flexibility, and balance while you are immersed in a relaxing class. Expect lots of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. This class is perfect for relieving stress and to help gain an overall sense of well-being.  Cost is $40 for the 8-week program. Please call (908) 753-9440 for more information.

Strength – Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. – This exercise program is designed to develop strength and enhance the ability to function in daily life. The exercise can be done with or without weights. A hand weight of 2-5 pounds is recommended, which can be brought by the clients for exercise. No fee for this ongoing class.Please call (908) 753-9440 for more information. No class August 14.

Line Dancing with Lynda Hyland – Thursdays, 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. Line dancing is so much fun that it does not even seem like exercise. You do not need a partner and dancing is an easy way to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. It is suitable for participants with limited mobility and has been shown to increase cardiovascular and muscular strength as well as improve coordination and balance as you work through different moves.

Card/Table Games – Thursdays, 1 – 4 p.m. Join in and play some of your favorite games such as Dominoes, Left-Center-Right, dice games, Rummikub, Canasta, Mexican Train, and more.

Bridge – Fridays, 1 – 4 p.m. Bridge is a mentally challenging card game that offers intellectual and social stimulation. Playing bridge regularly stimulates your brain and helps keep your memory active and your brain alert.

Tai Chi with Roger – Fridays, 10 a.m. Tai Chi participants will focus on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long gesture with guidance from center volunteer, Roger. Studies have shown that some participants have experienced a reduction in pain, fatigue, and stiffness and have gained a greater sense of well-being. Tai Chi can help reduce falls, especially for those with balance problems. This program can be practiced while either standing or sitting.
